Harmonious Times for Good Old War

Harmonious Times for Good Old War

Last week Dan Schwartz and Tim Arnold, two-thirds of the emerging folk-rock trio Good Old War, were seated on the patio of an East Village bar here when a sudden storm struck the region. So strong was the wind that the third member, Keith Goodwin, who was driving home to visit his pregnant wife in Langhorne, Pa., thought to call his band mates and warn them to stay inside. At the bar, as fallen leaves and branches blew by, a brick loosened, tumbled and landed hard on Mr. Schwartz's left hand. He spent the night in the hospital. And though he tried to perform the following night when the band was booked to open for the British indie band Gomez, he couldn't. And then Gomez canceled the tour when its vocalist, Ben Ottewell, came down with laryngitis.

And thus ended Good Old War's dream season. Earlier in the year the band played at the massive Coachella Music & Arts Festival and served as the opening act for both the alt-rock band Guster and Alison Krauss & Union Station, which introduced it to country and bluegrass audiences. During performances, members of Ms. Krauss's all-star band often joined in. "I look across the stage and there's Jerry Douglas playing Dobro on a song we wrote," Mr. Goodwin said recently at a doughnut shop in Hell's Kitchen. His injured hand wrapped in bandages, Mr. Schwartz also noted that "Ron Block played banjo with us almost every night." After the shows with Ms. Krauss and the band, Good Old War sold up to 200 CDs a night at the venue's merchandise table.

The members of the trio play multiple instruments, often at the same time: Mr. Arnold stands at the drums so he can reach a keyboard or an accordion with a free hand; Mr. Goodwin plays bass parts on keys or adds percussion while also strumming a guitar; and Mr. Schwartz shifts among several guitars, some of which are braced high on stands for easy access.

FBI Pakistani Spies Spent Millions Lobbying U.S.

FBI Pakistani Spies Spent Millions Lobbying U.S.

For years, the Pakistani spy agency funneled millions of dollars to a Washington nonprofit group in a secret effort to influence Congress and the White House, the Justice Department said Tuesday in court documents that are certain to complicate already strained relations between the U.S. and Pakistan.

FBI agents arrested Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council, on Tuesday and charged him with being an unregistered agent of a foreign government. Under the supervision of a senior member of Pakistan's spy agency, Inter-Services Intelligence, Fai donated money to political campaigns, wrote newspaper op-eds, organized congressional trips and met with White House and State Department officials.

"I believe that Fai has received approximately $500,000 to $700,000 per year from the government of Pakistan," FBI agent Sarah Webb Linden said in documents filed in federal court in Alexandria, Va.

Officially, the Kashmiri American Council had a much smaller budget and told the U.S. government that it received no foreign grants, according to Internal Revenue Service documents. Pakistan was financing similar operations in London and Brussels, the Justice Department said.

The Pakistani Embassy quickly issued a statement saying the government had no knowledge of such an arrangement.

Talent shortage a bottleneck for China's auto industry

Talent shortage a bottleneck for China's auto industry

For China's auto industry to become more advanced it must break through the talent shortage bottleneck to boost technological innovation, experts said at an auto expo being held in the northeastern province of Jilin.

Despite the rapid growth of the auto sector in recent years, the country still lags far behind auto powers Germany, Japan and the United States in technology, development environment, innovation and talents, said Fu Yuwu, vice chairman with the Society of Automotive Engineers of China, while attending the eighth China Changchun International Auto Expo.

"But the root cause of all the other three weaknesses is the talent shortage. The world's largest auto market has to solve the problem in order to transform from a big auto manufacturer to a strong one," Fu said.

Speaking at a forum held during the auto expo, Zhang Xiaoyu, executive vice president of China Machinery Industry Federation, echoed his views, saying that independent innovation is the key to accomplish the goal.

The 2011 International Forum on Advanced Vehicle Technologies and Integration (VTI 2011), focusing on technical discussions, is jointly held by Society of Automotive Engineers of China, China FAW Group and Jilin University from July 16-18 in Jilin's capital city of Changchun, the cradle of the country's automotive industry and one of the largest auto manufacturing centers.

"That's why we hold the VTI 2011 during the auto expo this year, through which we hope to promote inter-industry technological exchanges," Zhang said.
